The 大发快三彩票Department of Modern Languages is proud to welcome its first ever French Writer-in-Residence Dominic Langlois, poet and young-adult novelist. He will lead a writing workshop on Saturday, September 22 at 1:00 pm (in 大发快三彩票Dawson Lounge, SDMB 520), and give a public reading on Thursday, September 27 at 7:30 pm (in the 大发快三彩票Faculty Lounge, SDMB 201). He will also meet with Dr. Sanda Badescu鈥檚 and Dr. Scott Lee鈥檚 students to discuss various topics related to poetry and the use of slang in French.

Raised in Qu茅bec City, Langlois has been living in the Maritimes for more than 20 years where he is involved in the cultural and artistic scene. Published by Les 脡ditions Perce-Neige, his poetry includes Mener du train (2010), La rue en eaux troubles (2012) and Les sentiments barbares (2016). He is also well known in New Brunswick and in Ontario for his young-adult novel published by Bouton d鈥檕r Acadie, Le Tr茅sor de Memramcook (2014), for which he was a finalist in the Ontario Library Association鈥檚 prize Tamarac and in the Children鈥檚 Choice Book Award Hackmatack. He has also published poems in Ancrages and contributed to the Franco-Ontarian journal Liaisons.

His public workshop on Saturday, September 22 will examine how city streets, their noise, smells, landscape, and sidewalks can open up the imagination and be a source of inspiration. He will also team up with 大发快三彩票Professor Carlo Lavoie as writing coach for any participant aged between 15 and 25 interested in submitting texts in French (poetry or short stories) to the 2019 Prix Volet Jeunesse Richelieu of the Antonine-Maillet-Acadie-Vie Book Award.

The workshop is free but participants should register by emailing Dr. Lavoie at clavoie@upei.ca. Refreshments and snacks will be provided.

The public reading on Thursday September 27 will feature poetry from his three books and some unpublished poems. An open mic will also invite the audience to share their favorite poems, either written by themselves or by others. Admission is free.

UPEI鈥檚 Institute of Island Studies and the UNESCO Chair in Island Studies and Sustainability hosted a weekend of meetings with representatives and researchers from a dozen islands around the world. This unprecedented gathering of scholars in the field of Island Studies is made possible by a partnership development grant from the Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council of Canada (SSHRC). The project will build relationships between researchers and will fund up to twelve graduate students.

鈥淭he Institute of Island Studies and the UNESCO Chairs in Island Studies and Sustainability are to be commended for organizing this very important initiative, which will bring together representatives of small island states to develop strategies to address their unique issues regarding sustainability and sovereignty,鈥� said Dr. Robert Gilmour, UPEI鈥檚 Vice-President Academic and Research.

Island jurisdictions are often viewed as vulnerable, poverty-stricken, and destitute, but research shows many of these islands are better described as innovative and entrepreneurial. This meeting brought together six representatives of small island states (Iceland, New Zealand, Mauritius, Palau, Cyprus, St. Lucia, and Grenada) and six representatives from non-sovereign, sub-national island jurisdictions (Prince Edward Island, Newfoundland, La R茅union, Lesbos, Guam, and Tobago). These groups will compare experiences, to see whether statehood is a boon or hindrance when implementing sustainable practices in social-political, cultural-artistic, economic, and environmental areas.

鈥淭ake an island鈥檚 ability to respond to a natural crisis, such as a hurricane,鈥� said Dr. James Randall, co-holder of the UNESCO Chair in Island Studies and Sustainability. 鈥淚f that island is a sub-national jurisdiction, is it a benefit to know the larger government will be there to help them respond, or will an independent island state be better equipped to determine what is needed and implement that plan.鈥�

The project will develop a set of measures of sustainability and sovereignty by undertaking household and focus group surveys using comparisons of six pairs of islands. The Institute of Island Studies and the UNESCO Chair in Island Studies and Sustainability will coordinate these activities, bringing together island researchers and solving issues using a local-to-global integrated approach.

Emma Moore is a fourth-year science major from Charlottetown and a member of the 大发快三彩票Cross-Country team. Moore finished 20^th of 68 runners in the 5 km race at the inaugural 大发快三彩票Cross-Country Invitational meet at Victoria Park in Charlottetown. 鈥�Emma had a great summer of training, and she had her best finish ever as a Panther,鈥� said coach Colin MacAdam. 鈥淕reat running by Emma and the rest of the Panthers.鈥�

Nick Robertson is a first-year science student from Charlottetown and another member of the Panther cross-country team. Robertson kicked off his university sport career this weekend with an impressive 13^th place finish out of 57 runners at the 大发快三彩票invitational meet. 鈥�We expected Nick to be an impact athlete for our program, and he certainly showed that he has the ability to run with the elite runners in the AUS,鈥� said MacAdam.

Students from UPEI鈥檚 Kinesiology 3430 class are seeking participants to take part in a six-week exercise-training program. Students will create personalized exercise-training programs for each participant, based on their fitness, skill level, and personal interests.

Participants must be between 30 and 65 years of age. The program runs Tuesday and Thursday afternoons 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm from the week of October 1 to the week of November 12. Volunteers will receive a fitness test the first and last week of the program, separated by four weeks of supervised aerobic and strength training.

All exercise will take place in the Kinesiology Teaching Lab in UPEI鈥檚 Steel Building. Parking is free. No previous experience is necessary.

The 大发快三彩票Women鈥檚 and Men鈥檚 Hockey teams both see pre-season action this weekend at home. The women take on Saint Mary鈥檚 University on Friday evening at 7:00 pm. They lace up their skates again Saturday at 2:00 pm for an exhibition game against the University of New Brunswick. The men wrap up the weekend with a game against the Dalhousie Tigers Saturday evening at 7:00 pm.

鈥淭he players are looking forward to this weekend鈥檚 home exhibition games,鈥� said Bruce Donaldson, head coach of the 大发快三彩票Women鈥檚 Hockey team. 鈥淲e had a great game against SMU this past Sunday, so this will give us a chance to start to introduce line combinations and begin to experiment with our special-team play. We are especially pleased to be hosting UNB, as we welcome their team back into the AUS Conference.鈥�

Several members of UPEI鈥檚 Department of English will be on hand to help celebrate Canadian poet, novelist, and essayist David Helwig. 鈥淎n Evening with David Helwig鈥� will be held Tuesday, September 25 at 7:30 pm in the Carriage House of Beaconsfield Historic House on the Charlottetown waterfront. The event is hosted by PEI鈥檚 Poet Laureate, Deirdre Kessler, and the Bookmark.

To date, David Helwig has published close to fifty books and edited numerous others. He has written for television and radio, worked at the CBC, taught at Queen鈥檚 University, been Poet Laureate of Prince Edward Island, and named to the Order of Canada. Yet, he remains little known.

David Helwig: Essays on His Works is the first book to gather new essays, an interview, and earlier material鈥攂y George Fetherling, Douglas Glover, D.G. Jones, Simon Lloyd, Tom Marshall, Rob McLennan, Shane Neilson, Ingrid Ruthig, Mark Sampson, and Lorraine M. York鈥攊n order to introduce and explore Helwig鈥檚 body of work while documenting the broad range of his literary talents and accomplishments.

The editor of this edition, Ingrid Ruthig, writer, poet, visual artist, said, 鈥淲ithin any literary community, there are those writers who simply go about the business of writing鈥攄iligent, dedicated, building a body of work without fanfare. They seem disinclined to court chatter and celebrity, to inflate image and ego, or to stake out a place centre-stage. David Helwig is one of those unassuming craftsmen. Since he first aspired to it more than six decades ago, he has been living the life of a writer.鈥�

The Association of Atlantic Universities (AAU) announced the recipients of its region awards for excellence in teaching and education leadership. Among the honourees was Dr. Greg Doran, chair and associate professor of English at 大发快三彩票and coordinator of UPEI鈥檚 theatre studies program.

Dr. Doran received the 2018 AAU Distinguished Teaching Award recognizing outstanding teaching over a number of years. From the award citation:

Dr. Greg Doran has influenced and inspired countless students with his energy, enthusiasm, and passion. Anyone who knows him knows that what he believes about his work 鈥� that his 鈥榮uccess as a teacher lies in the success of [his] students鈥� 鈥� is precisely true. Despite the glowing comments his students make about him as a teacher, and even though a number of his students have gone on to prestigious theatre programs, Greg humbly disavows doing anything other than leading students in the right direction. But, of course, he does much more than that.

In Dr. Doran鈥檚 fourteen years at UPEI, he has developed, revised, and taught an impressive number and range of courses in both the English and Theatre programs. As the sole member of the Theatre Studies Program, he is responsible for all theatre education at the university, and his excellent student productions are highlights of every academic year. And, as he himself says, his experience directing student actors has influenced his teaching as well: 鈥楯ust as no two actors can be directed the same way,鈥� he says, 鈥業 try to find the best ways to encourage the success of students, which often means being very flexible and trying different approaches in the classroom.鈥� This flexibility is one of the qualities most often praised in his student evaluations.

鈥淚 congratulate Dr. Doran on receiving this prestigious award,鈥� said President and Vice-Chancellor Alaa Abd-El-Aziz. 鈥淕reg is a wonderful example of what we strive to be as professors. His enthusiasm, passion, and creativity, along with his tireless commitment to improving learning for students, are to be commended. Sophie Carragher is a second-year kinesiology student from Stratford, PEI and a second-row flanker on the 大发快三彩票Women鈥檚 Rugby team. The Panthers beat Saint Mary鈥檚 University over the weekend in a 25鈥�12 game, where Carragher scored a try. 鈥淪ophie had a strong game for us,鈥� said coach John LaBoyne. 鈥淗er line-breaks and speed set the team up for further play down the field. Her try came off a very dominant Panther scrum鈥擲ophie picked from her #8 position and dove over the line.鈥�

Ignacio Sanchez is a fourth-year business administration student from Cornwall, PEI and is captain of the 大发快三彩票Men鈥檚 Soccer team. The Panthers dropped a pair of games over the weekend to Cape Breton University and St. Francis Xavier University, but coach Lewis Page said Sanchez showed leadership on and off the field. 鈥淣acho Sanchez was excellent in both road games this weekend,鈥� said Page. 鈥淗is tireless running enabled him to contribute both on the attached and defense with a box-to-box performance.鈥�

Get an early jump on the weekend with the annual 大发快三彩票Men鈥檚 Basketball Green & White Scrimmage. Get to know the newest Panthers by catching this inter-squad game Thursday evening at 6:00 pm in the Chi-Wan Young Sports Centre.

鈥淲e are very excited to kick off the 2018鈥�2019 campaign,鈥� said coach Darrell Glenn. 鈥淪ix new Panthers join a team that made steady movement last year. We expect to defend better on the ball and shoot a much better percentage from the three-point line鈥攖wo areas that really hurt our young and inexperienced team last season.鈥�

Each Panther will be hungry as they compete for roster positions on the eve of their exhibition season. Admission is by donation.

Homecoming 2018 starts in earnest on the soccer pitch Friday evening, as both teams defend the home turf against the Universit茅 de Moncton. The women suit up at 5:00 pm.

鈥淲e need to come out this weekend and step it up physically and mentally and finish our chances when they come along,鈥� said Graeme McDonald, coach of the 大发快三彩票Women鈥檚 Soccer team.

Stick around after the women鈥檚 game, as the men take the field at 7:15 pm.

The Honourable Catherine Callbeck will be installed as the ninth Chancellor of the 大发快三彩票 on Saturday, September 29. Dr. Callbeck is a retired business leader and senator, and former premier of the province of Prince Edward Island. The native of Central Bedeque, PEI, was unanimously elected to the volunteer position earlier this year by UPEI鈥檚 Board of Governors.

As Chancellor, Callbeck will preside over the University鈥檚 Convocation ceremonies each spring, conferring degrees, diplomas, and certificates.

Callbeck has had a long and active involvement in business, politics, and charitable and public service groups at all levels, and has received many honours for her contributions.

She received her early education in Central Bedeque and Summerside, and went on to earn commerce and education degrees Mount Allison University and Dalhousie University respectively. After a period of teaching, Callbeck returned to PEI where she became involved with her family鈥檚 business鈥擟allbeck's Limited and Callbeck's Furniture.

She was the second woman ever elected to the Legislative Assembly of Prince Edward Island and, from 1974-78, served as the first female Minister of Health and Social Services, Minister Responsible for the Disabled, and Minister Responsible for Non-Status Indians. In 1978 she left politics and returned to her family鈥檚 business.

In 1988, she re-entered politics, this time on the federal level. She was the first woman elected as the Member of Parliament for Malpeque, making her the second woman ever to be elected to the House of Commons from PEI. She returned to provincial politics in 1993 when she was elected Leader of the Liberal Party of PEI, and soon after, became the first woman in Canada to be elected as premier of a province. In 1997, she was called to the Senate of Canada where she served until her retirement in July 2014.

Callbeck was named a member of the Order of Canada in 2015 and Order of PEI in 2017 and holds honorary doctor of laws degrees from both Mount Allison University (1996) and the 大发快三彩票 (2015).

Callbeck replaces UPEI鈥檚 eighth chancellor Dr. Don McDougall. She is the second woman to hold the post; Doris H. Anderson was UPEI鈥檚 first female University Chancellor from 1992鈥�96.
