Bruce Donaldson, head coach of the 大发快三彩票Women鈥檚 Hockey team, is pleased to announce Jolena Gillard has committed to the Panthers for the 2018鈥�2019 season. Gillard is a versatile goal scoring forward from Deer Lake, Newfoundland and Labrador.

鈥淛olena will be a great addition to our line,鈥� said Donaldson. 鈥淪he has great size, a strong touch around the net, and should be able to adjust to the AUS level quickly. Gillard was the top scorer and MVP for the Newfoundland Midget AAA league, scoring more than 40 goals in the 2017鈥�2018 season, and helping her team win the league championship. She also played for the boys鈥� team at Elwood High School, recording 20 points in 20 games. She was just one of two girls (including her sister) on the boys鈥� team.

鈥淚 chose 大发快三彩票because I know it will give me the best education to pursue and help develop my career,鈥� said Gillard.

The flag raising was greeted by the largest-ever crowd in the event鈥檚 eight-year history, as students, staff, faculty, and community members attended the short ceremony. Brittany Jakubiec from the Queer Collective greeted everyone, while Treena Smith, director of Student Affairs, offered a few closing remarks on behalf of her department. Approximately 280 experts in animal behaviour and welfare from 27 countries will participate in the International Society for Applied Ethology (ISAE) 2018 Congress at the 大发快三彩票 from July 30 to August 3.

The opening ceremony of the conference will take place on Tuesday, July 31, from 9:00鈥�9:30 a.m. in the Duffy Science Centre Amphitheatre.

The Congress will bring together ethological and veterinary research under the theme, 鈥淓thology for health and welfare,鈥� with a specific session on veterinary aspects of ethology and welfare. The detailed program can be found at

Of particular note are three presentations on Tuesday, July 31, in the Duffy Science Centre Amphitheatre. Immediately following the opening ceremony is the Wood-Gush Memorial Lecture by Stevan Harnad, professor of psychology at Universit茅 du Qu茅bec 脿 Montr茅al. In his lecture entitled 鈥淭he Other-Minds Problem in Other Species,鈥� he will discuss the difficulty in studying the feelings of animals and the implications of animal sentience on the use of animals in society.

At 2:30 p.m., Temple Grandin, world-renowned animal scientist who has successfully applied research on animal behaviour to methods of handling and slaughter, will give a plenary talk on how to apply academic research on animal behaviour to commercial farms and slaughter plants.

And at 3:15 p.m., Jackie Wepruk, general manager of the National Farm Animal Care Council, will explain how research on animal behaviour is integrated into the national codes of practice written by livestock commodity groups.

During the conference, there will be 117 oral presentations and 89 poster presentations. Topics cover behaviour and welfare of many species, including horses, cattle, companion animals, laying hens, swine, sheep and goats, wildlife, and laboratory animals. A sampling of topics includes the ability of animals to evaluate technology such as virtual fencing; brain imaging to visualise neural activity associated with emotions in sheep; problems in using aversive dog training methods; the impairment of memory in dogs because of osteoarthritis; factors affecting fighting in pigs; different types of play behaviour in animals; and effects of zoo visitors on penguins.

The 700-member ISAE is the leading scientific society for the study of the behaviour and welfare of confined or domesticated animals, including companion, farm, zoo, and managed wild animals. This will be only the second time that the congress will be held in Canada and only the fifth time in North America. Over the last 50 plus years, the ISAE has facilitated a major expansion of diverse research on applied ethology and has contributed to an increased understanding of animal welfare. Members of the ISAE provide scientific expertise on committees and working groups, such as the National Farm Animal Care Council, that make recommendations on legislation, codes of practice, and guidelines designed to improve animal welfare.

Earlier this month, the Saudi Arabian government issued an order to all of its citizens studying in Canada that they must return home. UPEI鈥檚 International Student Office, Student Affairs, Office of the Registrar, and Chaplaincy Centre along with the 大发快三彩票Student Union have been supporting students as they prepare to leave campus.

In the 2018 winter semester, there were 49 students from Saudi Arabia registered at UPEI.

Over 400 delegates from around the world will gather in Charlottetown from September 2鈥�6 for the 8th International Symposium on Aquatic Animal Health (ISAAH).

The Atlantic Veterinary College and the Prince Edward Island (PEI) BioAlliance are partnering with the Fish Health Section (FHS) of the American Fisheries Society to host the symposium. This is only the second time that the symposium has been hosted in Canada since the inaugural conference in Vancouver, British Columbia, in 1988.

During the symposium, the delegates will discuss current business and research developments, trends, and the future of the aquatic animal health industry during scientific workshops, business meetings, and keynote and research presentations. The theme of the symposium is 鈥淚ntegrating Biotechnology in the Advancement of Aquatic Animal Health.鈥�

Dr. Godfrey Baldacchino, co-holder of the UNESCO Chair in Island Studies and Sustainability, has donated several of his latest publications to UPEI鈥檚 Robertson Library. The donation includes five books in the Rethinking the Island Series (Rowman & Littlefield), which he co-edited with Elizabeth McMahon and Elaine Stratford, as well as two books he edited: Solution Protocols to Festering Island Disputes: 'Win-Win' Solutions for the Diaoyu / Senkaku Islands (Routledge, 2017) and The Routledge International Handbook of Island Studies (Routledge, 2018).

鈥淔or the whole time Dr. Baldacchino has been involved with island studies at UPEI鈥� and that鈥檚 going on 20 years now鈥攈e鈥檚 always been collegial and generous in helping us develop our island studies collections,鈥� said Simon Lloyd, university archivist and liaison librarian for island studies.

Lloyd said this sort of partnership is especially important in the case of a scholar like Dr. Baldacchino, who writes and edits a large number of academic books, book chapters, and journal articles.

鈥淚sland studies as a multinational and interdisciplinary field of study has grown a lot, but Dr. Baldacchino remains one of the most active people in this field, especially in terms of published scholarship,鈥� added Lloyd.

This prolific published output鈥攔eflected in more than 180 references islandscholar.ca, the Robertson Library鈥檚 database of 大发快三彩票research鈥攖ranslates into a lengthy list of books and articles, many of which the library would have to acquire through expensive purchases or subscriptions if not for Dr. Baldacchino鈥檚 generosity.

鈥淎 university professor鈥檚 publications don't just magically appear in the university library,鈥� said Lloyd. 鈥淚t鈥檚 important that faculty keep us informed of what they鈥檙e publishing, and, where possible, deposit copies with us.鈥�

Lloyd recognized it is not always possible for faculty members to donate publications. The library will purchase faculty publications when necessary, but donations are always appreciated.

鈥淲hen you consider the average list price of a scholarly social sciences book last year was nearly $170 Canadian, it鈥檚 easy to see why new book donations matter.鈥�

Dr. Baldacchino has also been a leader in the open access movement, which encourages the sharing of published research without charge to readers.

鈥淒r. Baldacchino was the founding executive editor of Island Studies Journal, launched at 大发快三彩票in 2006鈥攁nd hosted online by the Robertson Library鈥攁nd that journal鈥檚 been fully open access from the first issue.鈥�

Lloyd also noted Dr. Baldacchino is a scholar who makes 鈥攂oth in-person and via e-mail鈥攁nd who encourages his students and colleagues to do likewise.

The Atlantic Veterinary College's 2018 Summer Research and Leadership Program wrapped up on Wednesday, August 29, with the presentations of awards for poster presentations.

The three-month program introduces veterinary and science students to careers in veterinary and biomedical research. The participants work on a summer research project with a faculty mentor, attend weekly lectures, and present a scientific poster at the conclusion of the program.

Twenty-four students participated in this year鈥檚 program. Ten students attended the National Veterinary Scholars Symposium at Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences in early August, where they were among 511 students from all over North America presenting posters on various aspects of veterinary medicine.

鈥淕etting experience in research is increasingly important for veterinary students,鈥� says Dr. Larry Hammell, Interim Dean of UPEI鈥檚 Faculty of Graduate Studies and Associate Dean of Graduate Studies and Research for AVC. 鈥淎VC鈥檚 Summer Research and Leadership Program provides students with excellent hands-on experience in research across different disciplines and in a wide variety of species.鈥�

At the awards ceremony at AVC on Wednesday, Erika Pugh, AVC Class of 2020, took first prize for her project, 鈥淓ffect of cranberry extract on feline oral squamous cell carcinoma proliferation and migration in vitro.鈥� She was supervised by Dr. Chelsea Martin, Department of Pathology and Microbiology.

George Munguia, AVC Class of 2020, received second prize for his project, 鈥淎 Needs Assessment for Atlantic Canada Veterinarians,鈥� supervised by Dr. Michelle Evason, Department of Companion Animals.

Austin Levi, Bachelor of Science, was awarded third prize for his project, 鈥淢olecular detection of Lyme pathogen Borrelia burgdorferi: A performance analysis of currently used PCR protocols. His supervisor was Dr. Sunny Hartwig, Department of Biomedical Sciences.

Three students received honourable mention for their projects:

• Patrick Belliveau, AVC Class of 2021, 鈥淓ffect of benzoylphenylureas on the moulting process of copepod stage sea lice (Lepeophtheirus salmonis), supervised by Dr. Mark Fast, Department of Pathology and Microbiology;
• Natalie Tocco, AVC Class of 2020, 鈥淭otal cell counts of equine bronchoalveolar lavage samples using ImageJ software,鈥� supervised by Dr. Cora Gilroy and Dr. Shelley Burton, Department of Pathology and Microbiology;
• Jessica D鈥橝mico, AVC Class of 2020, for her pilot study, 鈥淧ain Evaluation in Ball Pythons Receiving FSH Injections,鈥� supervised by Dr. Jonathan Spears, Department of Biomedical Sciences.
